Let me share my story
I didn’t even believe I could lead and direct others in the past. From childhood, I have always struggled with low self esteem and self-confidence. As I got out of my parent’s house into the real world I always put a brave face on it and had big imposter syndrome issues .
This is due in part to my introverted personality, I needed more thinking and processing time to make decisions, so I will always not be able to step-up and speak up speedily.
I was also brought up in a very controlled environment that didn’t facilitate helping to build my confidence with people. My dad always minimised my life experiences. In his own way he was trying to keep me safe, but this only amplified my fear and feeling of inadequacy.
When I started my first job, things came to a fore when my Manager said to me “ Patience you need to stop being subservient ( behaving less important; subordinate and prepared to obey others unquestioningly}. I wasn’t aware I was doing this but this alerted me to how much damage my lack of self-esteem and confidence was costing me.
So I started to work on myself, through books, coaching and mentoring. My career started to get better
After joining the John Maxwell team and Launching out in my business, I kept putting myself out of my comfort zone and volunteering for opportunities to impact and influence others. This was way out of my comfort zone but it helped to increase my capacity and comfort zone. Then again I got another Eureka moment in 2019, that my leadership lid needed to be raised if I was every going to achieve the next level of growth in my life and business. I began to work and focus more on leadership skill development. This has seen my business grow and get established. Then I realised that there were opportunities to keep evolving and developing my skills in the area of leadership
I began to notice people looking up to me for guidance and direction.
My performance improved and my ability to self regulate got better
I began to engage teams and look to manage them effectively. I understood my gaps and started to work on them
Embracing the idea that giving up helps you go up. This allowed me to hone in on working towards the freedom that I desired through setting up my own business.
I have also been able to strike the balance between my gifting, professionalism, increasing my assertiveness and directing.
